The Whitney Stakes is one of Saratoga’s signature races for older dirt horses and one of the most important summer tests on the road to the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

- Surface: Dirt
- Distance: 1 1/8 miles
- Grade: Grade 1

- Championship connection: the race is a Breeders’ Cup Challenge event for the Classic
The Whitney sits near the center of Saratoga’s summer championship program. Its nine furlong distance attracts established older runners, while the automatic Breeders’ Cup berth gives the result direct importance for the fall.
Why the Whitney matters
The race regularly brings together horses with major form from the first half of the season. A strong Whitney can confirm an older horse as a leading Classic contender or reshape the division before later summer and fall races.
The race also has a long connection to Saratoga history and remains one of the most recognizable fixtures of the meet.
2026 Whitney: Sovereignty returns to winning form
Sovereignty won the 2026 Whitney by 4 3/4 lengths for Godolphin, trainer Bill Mott and jockey Junior Alvarado. The 4 year old completed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:47.91.
The result earned Sovereignty an automatic starting position in the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland. It also marked a major return to winning form after his earlier 2026 defeats in the Oaklawn Handicap and Stephen Foster.
