The Pegasus World Cup Invitational is one of the major early season dirt races for older Thoroughbreds in the United States. Run at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida, the race has quickly become a high profile January target for established stars and horses beginning a new championship campaign.
Pegasus World Cup at a glance
- Track: Gulfstream Park
- Surface: Dirt
- Distance: 1 1/8 miles
- 2026 purse: $3 million
- Eligibility: 4 year olds and older
- Championship connection: the 2026 edition was part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series for the Classic
The event reached its 10th running in 2026. Gulfstream Park lists the race as a Grade 1 contest over nine furlongs and has used the Pegasus as the centerpiece of a broader race day that also includes major turf events.
Why the Pegasus matters
The January position on the calendar gives the Pegasus a distinctive role. Some runners arrive after a Breeders’ Cup campaign, while others use Gulfstream as the first major test of a new season. That mix often produces fields combining proven older horses with runners trying to move into the top level.
The race also gained a direct championship connection in 2026 when it joined the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series. The winner received an automatic starting position in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland, along with the program’s associated entry benefits.
