The Travers Stakes is Saratoga’s signature race for three year olds and one of the most important summer tests in American racing.
Travers Stakes at a glance
- Track: Saratoga Race Course
- Surface: Dirt
- Distance: 1 1/4 miles
- Grade: Grade 1
- 2026 purse: $1.25 million
- Traditional role: the centerpiece of Saratoga’s summer meet
The Travers was first run in 1864 and is one of the oldest major stakes races for three year old horses in the United States. It often brings together spring classic runners and later developing horses that emerge during the summer.
Why the Travers matters
The race is a major test because it comes after the Triple Crown season and gives the division a chance to reset. Horses that improve during June, July and August can challenge the established spring leaders over the classic distance of 1 1/4 miles.
A Travers victory can redefine the three year old championship picture and influence the route toward major autumn races and the Breeders’ Cup.
2026 Travers Stakes
Leading Change won the 2026 Travers for Wathnan Racing, trainer Brad Cox and jockey Manny Franco. The victory came in the 157th running of the race at Saratoga.
The field included major spring names such as Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Golden Tempo, Preakness winner Napoleon Solo and Jim Dandy winner Renegade. Leading Change’s result gave the summer division a significant new leader.
Travers traditions
The winning connections receive the Man o’ War Cup, a solid gold trophy with deep ties to Saratoga history. The winning horse’s name is engraved inside the bowl.
Another Saratoga tradition centers on the canoe in the infield lake. The canoe is painted in the colors of the reigning Travers winner’s connections, creating one of the meet’s most recognizable visual traditions.
