Kentucky Oaks

The Kentucky Oaks is the premier American race for three year old fillies and one of the defining events of Kentucky Derby week at Churchill Downs.

Kentucky Oaks at a glance

  • Track: Churchill Downs
  • Surface: Dirt
  • Distance: 1 1/8 miles
  • Grade: Grade 1
  • 2026 purse: $1.5 million

The Oaks has been part of Churchill Downs history since the nineteenth century. It remains a centerpiece of the spring racing calendar and gives the leading fillies of their generation a championship stage of their own.

Why the Kentucky Oaks matters

The race brings together fillies that emerge from the major prep series around the country. The winner often becomes a leading figure in the three year old filly division and can influence the rest of the season, including major summer and autumn Grade 1 races.

Oaks Day also has a distinct identity at Churchill Downs. The winner receives the traditional lilies garland, while the event is closely associated with the Pink Out tradition and breast cancer awareness.

2026 Kentucky Oaks

Always a Runner won the 152nd Kentucky Oaks on May 1, 2026. She defeated Meaning and Explora by 1 1/4 lengths and completed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.62.

The victory kept Always a Runner unbeaten through three starts. Chad Brown trained the winner and Jose Ortiz rode her. It was Brown’s first Kentucky Oaks victory and Ortiz’s second.

The 2026 edition was also historic because the Kentucky Oaks was presented in primetime for the first time.

How the Oaks fits into Derby week

The Kentucky Oaks is run one day before the Kentucky Derby. Together, the two races form the competitive core of Churchill Downs’ biggest annual racing week.
