The 2026 Melbourne Cup picture

Reigning winner Half Yours headlines the initial nominations as he attempts to return to the race that completed his Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double in 2025. The nomination list also includes major representation from the leading Australian stables and a substantial international group.

The path toward the final field continues throughout the spring. Melbourne Cup weights are scheduled to be released on September 17, followed by the first round of acceptances on September 29.

The Group 3 Archer Stakes at Flemington on September 12 is one of the important qualifying races because its winner receives a ballot exemption into the Melbourne Cup. Nearco Frod enters that race seeking a fifth consecutive victory and a guaranteed Cup berth.

A race with history dating to 1861

The first Melbourne Cup was run at Flemington on November 7, 1861. Archer won that inaugural edition and returned to win again the following year. The race has remained at the center of the Flemington spring program and developed into an international staying championship.

Why the Melbourne Cup matters

The Melbourne Cup brings together established Australian stayers and international horses prepared specifically for a demanding 3200 metre handicap. Its qualifying process, weight structure and changing order of entry create a long build toward the final field.
