E.P. Taylor Turf Course at Woodbine Racetrack

Breeders’ Stakes

The Breeders’ Stakes is the third and final jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown for three year olds foaled in Canada. The 2026 edition is scheduled for Sunday, September 27 at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto.

2026 Breeders’ Stakes

Woodbine lists the 136th running for September 27, 2026 at one mile and one half on the E.P. Taylor Turf Course for Canadian foaled three year olds.

Woodbine’s event page promotes the race with a $500,000 purse. The official stakes schedule lists $400,000 guaranteed, plus up to $100,000 for eligible Ontario bred runners. Together, those figures explain the $500,000 value presented on the event page.

The first race on the September 27 program is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Eastern. Woodbine had not yet published the final Breeders’ Stakes field when this guide was updated, so OTB Bet will add confirmed runners only after official entries are available.

Why the Breeders’ Stakes matters

The race completes one of the most unusual Triple Crown tests in Thoroughbred racing. A horse pursuing the Canadian Triple Crown must handle three tracks and three surfaces across the series. The final leg then stretches the contenders to one mile and one half on turf, placing a premium on stamina and efficiency.

That makes the Breeders’ Stakes useful even when no horse arrives with a Triple Crown sweep still possible. It can identify developing turf horses, reward late season progress, and provide an important championship stage for Canadian bred runners.

The Canadian Triple Crown path

Woodbine reported 83 nominees for the 2026 Canadian Triple Crown. The series opened with the King’s Plate at Woodbine on August 15, continued with the Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie on September 7, and concludes with the Breeders’ Stakes on September 27.

Woodbine describes the series as unique because each leg is contested on a different surface. That structure rewards versatility as much as raw speed.

Race conditions and course

The Breeders’ Stakes is restricted to three year olds foaled in Canada. The 2026 race is scheduled at one mile and one half on the E.P. Taylor Turf Course.

The restored E.P. Taylor course is also central to Woodbine’s broader fall turf program. OTB Bet readers can continue from this race into the Canadian International guide, which covers another major one mile and one half turf event at Woodbine, and the Woodbine Mile guide for the track’s leading mile championship.

What to watch next

The most important next step is the official entry release. Until that field is published, contender lists remain provisional. OTB Bet will treat confirmed entries, scratches and race day changes separately from early nominations.

Once the field is official, this page will serve as the permanent race hub for the final lineup, result, winner and future editions rather than creating thin duplicate guides.
