History
The Preakness Stakes was first run in 1873, making it the second-oldest of the three Triple Crown races behind the Belmont Stakes. Over its history, the race has been held at several distances, but the modern distance of 1 3/16 miles has been in place since 1925.
Pimlico Race Course has been the race’s historic home for most of its existence. In 2026, the Preakness moved temporarily to Laurel Park while Pimlico was rebuilt. The event returns to Baltimore in 2027, beginning a new chapter at the redeveloped venue.
The Preakness is known as the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown and follows the Kentucky Derby before the series concludes with the Belmont Stakes. Its winner is traditionally honored with a blanket inspired by Maryland’s black-eyed Susan.
