Overview
The Belmont Stakes is the oldest race in the American Triple Crown and traditionally serves as its final leg. First run in 1867, the race returns to Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, in 2027 after three editions were staged at Saratoga Race Course during the reconstruction of Belmont Park.
The 158th Belmont Stakes was held at Saratoga in 2026 and won by Golden Tempo, trained by Cherie DeVaux and ridden by Jose Ortiz. The 2027 Belmont Stakes is scheduled for Saturday, June 5, at the reimagined Belmont Park, where the race returns to its traditional 1 1/2-mile distance on dirt.

History
The Belmont Stakes was first run in 1867 at Jerome Park, predating both the Preakness Stakes and Kentucky Derby. It is the oldest of the three Triple Crown events and has been contested at several New York tracks during its long history.
The race has been associated with Belmont Park since the track opened in 1905. The 1 1/2-mile distance became the modern standard in 1926. Because of Belmont Park’s redevelopment, the Belmont Stakes moved to Saratoga Race Course from 2024 through 2026 and was shortened to 1 1/4 miles for those editions.
In 2027, the Belmont Stakes returns to Long Island and the newly reimagined Belmont Park. The return restores the race to its traditional home and distance, closing the Triple Crown over 12 furlongs.
