The Cox Plate is one of Australia’s defining championship races and a central test of elite weight for age form. The 2026 edition will be especially unusual because the race leaves its traditional home at Moonee Valley for the first time in its history.
2026 Cox Plate
The 106th Cox Plate is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, 2026, at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne. Moonee Valley Racing Club confirmed the temporary move while The Valley undergoes a major redevelopment. Racing is expected to return to the rebuilt venue for the 2027 and 2028 season.
The Cox Plate remains a Group 1 race for horses aged three and older under weight for age conditions. The official race record lists the distance at 2040 metres and prize money of $6 million.
Why the 2026 edition is different
The Cox Plate has always been closely identified with Moonee Valley, where the short home straight and tight layout create a distinctive tactical challenge. Flemington offers a very different racecourse shape, with a broad sweeping turn and a much longer home straight. That makes the 2026 running a rare edition in which established Cox Plate history meets a completely different racing environment.
The race will share the program with the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup. The temporary format also replaces the traditional two day Cox Plate carnival while the redevelopment continues.
Why the Cox Plate matters
The race is designed to bring together leading middle distance horses from different generations under weight for age conditions. Its honour roll includes champions such as Winx, Kingston Town, Phar Lap, Sunline and So You Think. Winx holds the modern benchmark with four consecutive victories from 2015 through 2018.
The Cox Plate sits at the heart of the Australian spring and often connects directly with the Melbourne Cup conversation. The races demand different qualities, but the timing places both at the center of the same championship period.
What to watch in 2026
OTB Bet will update this guide as the official field, barrier draw and race day conditions are confirmed. Until declarations are final, prospective runners should be treated as contenders rather than confirmed starters.
The venue change is the most important strategic factor for the 2026 edition. Racing style, draw, pace and a horse’s ability to finish strongly at Flemington could matter differently than they would at Moonee Valley.
