  • Saratoga Jockey and Trainer Titles Tighten in Final Week

Saratoga Jockey and Trainer Titles Tighten in Final Week

Saratoga’s final week is not only about graded stakes. Two season-long championship races remain unsettled as the meet heads toward its closing day.

In the jockey standings, Manny Franco and Flavien Prat are battling for the riding title, with both seeking their first championship at the Spa. The margin is tight enough that a strong afternoon can change the order quickly.

Franco and Prat keep the pressure on

Franco entered the final stretch with a heavy book of mounts, while Prat was also scheduled for a full slate before leaving for Kentucky Downs on Sunday. The scheduling difference could matter because every remaining opportunity becomes significant when the standings are this close.

The Saratoga riding title has been dominated by the Ortiz brothers for much of the past decade, making the current race notable for a different reason: the winner would break through for a first Spa championship.

Brown and Rice renew their trainer rivalry

The trainer standings feature another familiar Saratoga matchup. Chad Brown held a narrow advantage over Linda Rice entering the final days, with both barns still holding numerous entries.

Brown is seeking another Saratoga training title after a career filled with success at the meet. Rice has been one of his strongest challengers in recent seasons, including a shared title in 2023.

Closing day could decide both races

Saratoga’s meet concludes Monday, September 7. With jockeys and trainers still separated by small margins, the championships could remain undecided until the final card.

That adds another layer to the closing weekend: beyond the major stakes and emerging horses, nearly every win can influence two of the meet’s most prestigious individual honors.

  • Travers Stakes Recap: Leading Change Upsets Golden Tempo and Napoleon Solo

Travers Stakes Recap: Leading Change Upsets Golden Tempo and Napoleon Solo

Leading Change turned the 2026 Travers Stakes (G1) into one of Saratoga’s biggest surprises of the summer, sweeping past Napoleon Solo in the stretch and denying Golden Tempo another marquee victory.

The $1.25 million Travers brought together the winners of the season’s major 3-year-old races, but the result belonged to a horse who entered with less name recognition and left with a Grade 1 breakthrough.

    Leading Change finishes strongest

Sent off at double-digit odds, Leading Change settled into the race before producing his best run when the field turned for home. Manny Franco guided him outside for the stretch drive, and the colt responded with enough acceleration to get past Preakness winner Napoleon Solo.

Golden Tempo, winner of both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, was unable to produce the same finishing kick and finished behind the top pair.

A Travers that reshapes the division

The result matters beyond one afternoon at Saratoga. The 3-year-old division entered the Travers with several established leaders, but Leading Change’s victory adds another major name to the second half of the season.

For trainer Brad Cox, the performance confirmed that the colt belonged at Grade 1 level. For Franco, it was a well-timed ride that allowed Leading Change to conserve enough energy for the decisive part of the race.

    Big performances across Travers Day

The Travers was only part of a loaded Saratoga card. Hymn won the Forego Stakes (G1) and earned a Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile berth, Fully Subscribed dominated the Personal Ensign Stakes (G1), Englishman won the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial (G1), Naomis captured the Lake Placid Stakes (G2), and Ways and Means took the Ballerina Stakes (G1).

With the summer season moving toward its close, Leading Change’s Travers upset gives the 3-year-old picture a new storyline heading into the fall championship races.

  • Spinaway Stakes Preview: Summer Starlet Tops Eight-Filly Field at Saratoga

Spinaway Stakes Preview: Summer Starlet Tops Eight-Filly Field at Saratoga

The $300,000 Spinaway Stakes (G1) gives Saratoga’s 2-year-old fillies a major late-summer test, and the morning line points to Summer Starlet as the one to beat.

The Steve Asmussen trainee is listed at 2-1 in an eight-horse field and enters with enough early promise to make her the clear focal point of the race. But the Spinaway is filled with lightly raced horses, which means one sharp step forward can completely reshape the division.

    Summer Starlet sets the standard

Summer Starlet drew post 2 and will be ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr. Her combination of speed and early form has put her on top of the morning line, but she will have to handle a field with several credible alternatives.

Life Changing is 5-2 for trainer Todd Pletcher and gives Flavien Prat another live mount at the meet. Harper’s Corner is 5-1, while Angel of Kirk is 9-2 for Brad Cox.

A race that can change quickly

Juvenile Grade 1 races are rarely just about what a horse has already done. Development, pace and how each filly handles the pressure of a bigger field can matter just as much.

That is what makes the Spinaway especially useful to watch beyond the result itself. A strong performance can immediately elevate a young filly into the Breeders’ Cup conversation later in the fall.

    Spinaway morning line

    • Bandmaster: 30-1
    • Summer Starlet: 2-1
    • Cha Cha Baby: 15-1
    • Stress Relief: 8-1
    • Girvy Girl: 8-1
    • Harper’s Corner: 5-1
    • Angel of Kirk: 9-2
    • Life Changing: 5-2

For bettors, the main question is whether Summer Starlet can confirm her favorite status or whether one of the less exposed fillies is ready to make the biggest jump of her career.

  • Nashville Derby Preview: European Runners Take Aim at Kentucky Downs

Nashville Derby Preview: European Runners Take Aim at Kentucky Downs

Kentucky Downs has built its reputation on unusual turf racing and oversized purses, and the $3 million Nashville Derby Invitational (G2) is one of the clearest examples.

The 1 5/16-mile race for 3-year-olds drew a 12-horse field, including four European-based runners who bring experience over longer turf distances and major international form.

    Causeway leads the market

Causeway, trained by Aidan O’Brien, is the 5-2 morning-line favorite. The Irish-based colt won the King Edward VII Stakes (G2) at Royal Ascot before finishing seventh in the Grand Prix de Paris (G1) over softer ground.

The switch to the firmer, rolling Kentucky Downs surface gives him a very different test, but his class makes him the horse the rest of the field has to measure against.

Glacius already proved he can ship

Glacius is 4-1 and may have the most important local advantage among the international runners: he has already won in the United States. The Hugo Palmer trainee took the Saratoga Derby (G1) in front-running fashion and has had time to acclimate to American racing.

Germany is represented by Gostam at 6-1, while Joseph O’Brien sends out Nil Bua Gan Dua at 10-1.

Can the home team keep the purse?

Among the U.S.-based runners, Fancy Sailor is one of the more interesting options at 8-1 after winning the Water Tower Stakes at Ellis Park. Royal Guard is also 8-1, while several other domestic runners sit in double-digit territory.

Eight of the 12 runners are Kentucky-breds and are eligible for the full $3 million purse. The remaining runners compete for a $1.75 million share, still making this one of the richest turf races on the calendar.

    Key morning-line odds

    • Causeway: 5-2
    • Glacius: 4-1
    • Gostam: 6-1
    • Royal Guard: 8-1
    • Fancy Sailor: 8-1
    • Nil Bua Gan Dua: 10-1

Post time is scheduled for 5:36 p.m. ET. The race shapes up as a useful clash of styles: European stamina and turf class against a home group with familiarity and purse eligibility on its side.

  • Hopeful Stakes Preview: Booked and The Good Life Head Saratoga’s Juvenile Test

Hopeful Stakes Preview: Booked and The Good Life Head Saratoga’s Juvenile Test

Saratoga’s closing weekend puts the 2-year-old division in the spotlight, and the $300,000 Hopeful Stakes (G1) brings together an eight-horse field with speed, upside and very little margin for error.

The seven-furlong race is led on the morning line by Booked at 3-1. The Steve Asmussen trainee already owns the strongest graded-stakes résumé in the field after winning the Sanford Stakes (G3) and returning with a runner-up finish in the Saratoga Special (G2).

The Good Life faces his first major class test

The Good Life, trained by Brad Cox, is 7-2 after an impressive debut win at Saratoga. He drew the rail, a position that could force Manny Franco to use the colt’s natural speed early rather than risk being shuffled back.

That creates one of the key tactical questions in the race. Booked has also shown speed, while several lightly raced rivals are still developing their preferred running styles. If the opening fractions become aggressive, the Hopeful could set up for a horse able to settle just behind the leaders.

    Other contenders to watch

Midnight Still is listed at 9-2, while Lifesong is 5-1 and brings a more tactical profile after winning his debut from off the pace. Mystrix is 4-1, giving the field four runners priced at 5-1 or lower on the morning line.

The rest of the field includes High Official, Flight Command and Constant Force. With most of these juveniles still early in their careers, improvement from one start to the next could matter as much as established form.

    Hopeful Stakes field

    • The Good Life: 7-2
    • High Official: 8-1
    • Booked: 3-1
    • Flight Command: 10-1
    • Midnight Still: 9-2
    • Constant Force: 15-1
    • Lifesong: 5-1
    • Mystrix: 4-1

Post time is scheduled for 5:19 p.m. ET. For handicappers, the central decision is whether Booked’s proven class can overcome another demanding pace, or whether a less experienced rival takes a major step forward at the right time.
