Dubai World Cup

The Dubai World Cup is one of the most important international dirt races in the sport. Staged at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai, the Group 1 event brings together elite runners from several major racing regions and anchors a championship card built around international competition.

Dubai World Cup basics

The Dubai World Cup is contested over 2000 meters on dirt at Meydan. The race carries a purse of US$12 million, making it one of the richest Thoroughbred races in the world. Dubai Racing Club lists the 31st running for Saturday, March 27, 2027, with the full Dubai World Cup card offering US$30.5 million across nine races.

The race was first run in 1996 at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse, where Cigar won the inaugural edition. It later became the centerpiece of racing at Meydan and has developed into a meeting point for leading horses from North America, Japan, Europe, the Middle East, and other major racing markets.

Magnitude wins the 2026 Dubai World Cup

Magnitude produced the defining performance of the 2026 renewal on March 28. Trained by Steve Asmussen and ridden by Jose Ortiz, the American runner took control early and stayed in front to defeat Forever Young in the 30th Dubai World Cup.

The result carried particular weight because Forever Young arrived after winning the Saudi Cup and was attempting to add another major international dirt prize. Magnitude denied that bid and added the Dubai World Cup to a season that had already established him among the leading older dirt horses.

Why the Dubai World Cup matters

The Dubai World Cup sits at a unique point on the global racing calendar. It comes after the winter championship season in Saudi Arabia and before the major spring and summer campaigns in North America and Europe. That timing allows established stars and emerging international runners to meet before the rest of the year takes shape.

The meeting also connects directly to the Breeders’ Cup. The Dubai World Cup, Dubai Golden Shaheen, Dubai Sheema Classic, and Dubai Turf are part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, giving eligible winners automatic starting positions in corresponding championship races.

Dubai World Cup 2027

Dubai Racing Club has confirmed that the 2027 Dubai World Cup will be held on Saturday, March 27, at Meydan Racecourse. The card will again feature nine elite races, with US$30.5 million in total prize money and US$12 million assigned to the main event.
