The Florida Derby is one of the most important final preparation races for three year olds targeting the Kentucky Derby. Run at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida, the Grade 1 event has repeatedly produced horses that go on to play major roles in the Triple Crown.
Florida Derby basics
The Florida Derby is contested at 1 1/8 miles on dirt. The 2026 edition carried a purse of $1 million and was run on March 28 as the centerpiece of a major stakes program at Gulfstream Park.
The race is a key stop on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Its position late in the prep season gives contenders one final chance to prove they can handle two turns, high level competition, and the pressure of a major Grade 1 race.
Commandment wins the 2026 Florida Derby
Commandment won the 2026 Florida Derby by a nose over The Puma after rallying late into a slow early pace. The Brad Cox trained colt entered the race after winning the Fountain of Youth and confirmed his position among the leading Kentucky Derby prospects.
The victory also gave Cox consecutive Florida Derby wins after Tappan Street captured the race in 2025. Commandment completed the 1 1/8 mile test after navigating a tactical race that placed a premium on timing and finishing speed.
Why the Florida Derby matters
Gulfstream Park has long used the Florida Derby as the culmination of its winter series for three year olds. The Holy Bull and Fountain of Youth provide earlier tests, while the Florida Derby asks the strongest horses from that path to stretch out and deliver against a deeper field.
The race also has an unusually strong connection to the Triple Crown. Gulfstream notes that dozens of Florida Derby starters have later won Triple Crown races, making this more than a regional prep. It is one of the most proven routes to Churchill Downs.
Florida Derby and the national prep picture
The Florida Derby sits alongside the Blue Grass Stakes, Arkansas Derby, Santa Anita Derby, and Wood Memorial as one of the final races that define the Kentucky Derby field.
Because those races occur close together, the strongest comparison is not just who wins. Bettors and racing fans also watch how each horse handles distance, pace, traffic, and the quality of competition before the Derby.
