The Irish Champion Stakes is one of Europe’s defining middle distance races. Run at Leopardstown in County Dublin, the Group 1 contest brings leading three year olds and older horses together over 2,000 metres and regularly influences the autumn championship picture.
The 2026 Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes was run on September 12 as the feature race on the opening day of Irish Champions Festival. Hotazhell won the €1.25 million Group 1 for trainer Jessica Harrington and jockey Shane Foley.
Irish Champion Stakes race basics
The race is contested over 2,000 metres, approximately ten furlongs, on Leopardstown’s turf course. That distance places it between the classic mile and the longer championship races over 2,400 metres, creating a demanding test of tactical speed, stamina and position.
Leopardstown is a left turning turf circuit with an uphill finish. The layout can reward runners that settle efficiently before producing a sustained finish in the closing stages.
Why the race matters
The Irish Champion Stakes occupies an important position in the European autumn. Its timing gives elite turf horses several strategic options afterward, including the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris and other major championship races later in the season.
The race also has direct relevance for international championship planning. Past Irish Champion Stakes runners have continued toward major events outside Ireland, including the Breeders’ Cup. That makes Leopardstown an important checkpoint for assessing leading turf horses as the global season moves into its final months.
The 2026 Irish Champion Stakes
Irish Champions Festival takes place at Leopardstown on September 12 and at the Curragh on September 13. The 2026 festival has more than €5 million in total prize money and seven Group 1 races across the two days.
Hotazhell won the 2026 Irish Champion Stakes by a nose over Wimbledon Hawkeye after facing a final field of eight. The result gave Hotazhell another Group 1 success after his victory in Munich earlier in the summer.
