Thoroughbred racehorses competing on a dirt track

Blue Grass Stakes

The Blue Grass Stakes is one of the defining spring races for three year olds preparing for the Kentucky Derby. Run at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky, the Grade 1 event combines major qualifying value with one of the strongest traditions on the American racing calendar.

Blue Grass Stakes basics

The Blue Grass Stakes is contested at 1 1/8 miles on dirt at Keeneland. The race is named for Kentucky’s Bluegrass region and has long served as a final major test for leading Derby prospects before they move on to Churchill Downs.

In 2026, the Toyota Blue Grass carried a purse of $1.25 million and awarded 100 Kentucky Derby qualifying points to the winner. That made the race one of the most valuable final preps on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Further Ado dominates the 2026 Blue Grass Stakes

Further Ado delivered one of the most emphatic performances of the 2026 spring season when he won the Blue Grass Stakes by 11 lengths at Keeneland on April 4.

The victory gave the Spendthrift Farm colt 100 additional Derby qualifying points and raised his total to 135, securing his place in the Kentucky Derby starting gate. Trainer Brad Cox also strengthened an already deep Derby group with the performance.

Further Ado entered the race as the favorite and separated decisively from six rivals. The result added another important Keeneland chapter to a campaign that had already included a 20 length maiden victory at the track the previous October.

Why the Blue Grass Stakes matters

The race matters because it asks young horses to handle two turns, a demanding dirt surface, and the pressure of a major Grade 1 event close to the Kentucky Derby. A strong performance can confirm that a prospect belongs among the leading contenders for the first Saturday in May.

Keeneland has also made the Blue Grass a major event in its own right. The race sits at the center of the track’s spring program and connects Kentucky’s breeding, racing, and Derby traditions in one place.

Blue Grass Stakes and the Derby picture

The Blue Grass is best understood as part of a wider final prep sequence. The Florida Derby, Arkansas Derby, Santa Anita Derby, and Wood Memorial all help shape the field that reaches Churchill Downs.
