Thoroughbred horses racing on turf

Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint

The Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint is the championship test for elite grass sprinters. It brings together fast horses from North America, Europe and other international racing circuits in a short race where position, acceleration and a clean trip can decide the outcome.

2026 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint

The 2026 Breeders’ Cup World Championships take place at Keeneland on October 30 and October 31. The Turf Sprint is open to horses aged three and older and will be contested over 5 1/2 furlongs on turf.

The official Breeders’ Cup race schedule lists a $1 million purse and a maximum field of 14 starters. Online pre entry opens October 1, and the championship pre entry deadline is October 19.

How horses qualify

The Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series provides automatic qualifying races for the Turf Sprint division. The 2026 schedule includes major international and North American opportunities, including the World Pool Cape Flying Championship, Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint and Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp.

The Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint on September 5 produced Possiblemente as a confirmed Challenge Series winner, adding an important North American reference point to the developing championship picture.

Why the race matters

Turf sprinting rewards speed, tactical awareness and the ability to accelerate immediately when space opens. Because the Challenge Series reaches several racing regions, the championship can bring together horses with very different preparation paths and racing styles.
