The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint is the championship speed test for two year old turf horses. The race gives developing sprinters from North America and Europe a direct championship target before the season ends.
2026 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint
The 2026 Breeders’ Cup World Championships take place at Keeneland on October 30 and October 31. The Juvenile Turf Sprint is open to two year olds of either sex and will be contested over 5 1/2 furlongs on turf.
The official Breeders’ Cup race schedule lists a $1 million purse and a maximum field of 12 starters. Online pre entry opens October 1, and the championship pre entry deadline is October 19.
How horses qualify
The Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series includes automatic qualifying opportunities for the Juvenile Turf Sprint. Pershaada earned a place in the 2026 championship picture by winning the Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood on July 29.
The October 3 Futurity at Belmont Park is another important Challenge Series race for this division. That gives North American juveniles a late season opportunity to earn an automatic berth before Keeneland.
What makes the race different
Young turf sprinters have limited time to develop before the championship, so early speed must be combined with maturity and race awareness. A sharp break can be important, but the winner still needs to handle traffic, changing pace and pressure from rivals with different racing backgrounds.
