The Good Life Will Miss Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Return in 2027

One of the leading juveniles from the Saratoga meet is officially off the road to the Breeders’ Cup.

Hopeful Stakes winner The Good Life will not race again in 2026 and will instead be given time before returning for his three year old campaign in 2027. WinStar Farm CEO Elliott Walden announced the decision on September 23, saying the colt needs time and will receive 30 days in a paddock followed by 30 days of light training. Walden also said no surgery is planned.

A Breeders’ Cup Juvenile contender exits the picture

The decision removes an unbeaten Grade 1 winner from the developing Breeders’ Cup Juvenile picture at Keeneland. The Good Life had been under consideration for either the Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park or the Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland on October 3, with both races offering automatic qualification opportunities for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

Instead, his connections have chosen a longer view. That means The Good Life will finish his juvenile campaign unbeaten in two starts.

Why The Good Life attracted attention

Trained by Brad Cox for WinStar Farm, First Go Racing and CHC Inc., The Good Life made an immediate impression when he won his Saratoga debut on July 18. He then stepped directly into Grade 1 company in the Hopeful Stakes on September 6.

That test produced his most important performance yet. The son of Life Is Good controlled the seven furlong Hopeful and drew clear to win by four lengths in 1:24.08. The victory made him a major prospect in a juvenile division that will continue to take shape through the final round of Breeders’ Cup qualifying races.

What changes next

The Good Life had not yet secured an automatic Breeders’ Cup berth, but his Hopeful victory had placed him among the more interesting young dirt horses heading toward October. His absence now removes a proven Grade 1 winner from the Juvenile conversation before the Champagne and Breeders’ Futurity.

For OTB Bet readers following the championship trail, the next important step is October 3. Belmont Park hosts the Champagne Stakes, while Keeneland stages the Breeders’ Futurity on the same day. Those races should provide a clearer picture of the leading contenders headed toward the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
