Belmont Park Reopens Friday With New Grandstand and Four Racing Surfaces

Belmont Park is ready to begin a new chapter on Friday, September 18, when live racing returns to Elmont after a major redevelopment transformed one of American racing’s most historic venues.

The reopening is more than a return to a familiar address. The New York Racing Association says the new Belmont Park is centered around a roughly 300,000 square foot, five story building, replacing the much larger previous grandstand while creating more open green space for fans.

Four racing surfaces define the new Belmont

The racing infrastructure has also changed significantly. Belmont now has a renovated main dirt track, two turf courses and a new all weather synthetic surface. NYRA plans to use the synthetic course for winter racing, races moved off the turf and year round training.

That expanded setup gives New York racing more flexibility as Belmont becomes the primary downstate home of the circuit.

    Forever Young leads opening day

The $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup headlines Friday’s nine race opening program. Forever Young leads the five horse field in the Grade 1 event, which is contested at one and one quarter miles and awards the winner an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

OTB Bet has a full Jockey Club Gold Cup preview as well as a permanent Jockey Club Gold Cup guide.

Opening day is already sold out, according to NYRA. Racing continues through the fall meet, giving fans their first extended look at the rebuilt venue.

    A longer term championship role

The reopening also sets up two major returns. The Belmont Stakes is scheduled to return to Belmont Park in 2027 after three editions at Saratoga during construction. Belmont is also scheduled to host the 2027 Breeders’ Cup, its first time staging the championships since 2005.

For more on the venue, visit the OTB Bet Belmont Park guide and follow the latest developments on the Horse Racing News page.

  • Breeders’ Cup Trail Sharpens After Major International Weekend

Breeders’ Cup Trail Sharpens After Major International Weekend

The road to the 2026 Breeders’ Cup became clearer after a major international weekend produced several important qualifying performances in Canada and Ireland.

Breeders’ Cup officials highlighted the September 12 and September 13 results as the championship picture continues to take shape ahead of Keeneland in October.

Woodbine winners strengthen their championship cases

Notable Speech earned an automatic place in the Breeders’ Cup Mile by winning the Woodbine Mile. The result gives the accomplished turf runner a direct route back to the championship event.

Woodbine also produced automatic qualifiers in other divisions. Gimme a Nother secured a place in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf through the E.P. Taylor Stakes, while the juvenile races added important names to the developing two year old picture.

OTB Bet has full recaps of the Woodbine Mile and E.P. Taylor Stakes.

The Curragh adds more international depth

The Curragh also supplied major championship clues during Irish Champions Festival Sunday. Scandinavia captured the Irish St Leger, while the wider Group 1 program produced a remarkable series of high level performances.

Those results matter beyond one weekend. International form often plays a major role at the Breeders’ Cup, particularly in the turf divisions, and the latest European results provide another layer of evidence as connections decide whether to travel to Kentucky.

Read OTB Bet’s Irish St Leger recap and the Curragh Group 1 recap for the individual race results.

    What comes next

The championship fields are still developing, so qualifying does not guarantee that every eligible horse will start at Keeneland. Travel plans, training schedules and connections’ final decisions can still change the picture.

What is clear is that the international route to Keeneland is becoming more defined. OTB Bet will continue updating its Breeders’ Cup guide as additional contenders and confirmed plans emerge.

  • Stradale Heads 12 Horse Gallant Bob Stakes Field at Parx

Stradale Heads 12 Horse Gallant Bob Stakes Field at Parx

The Gallant Bob Stakes adds a deep sprint to Pennsylvania Derby Day at Parx Racing on September 19. Twelve three year olds are entered for the Grade 2 race at six furlongs, with Stradale listed as the 4 to 1 morning line favorite.

Stradale starts from post 8 for trainer Steven Asmussen with Jose Ortiz aboard. Captivator is listed at 9 to 2 from post 10, while Langvad is 5 to 1 from post 5. Bravaro, Dr. Kapur, Ryan’s Run and Amberjack each add further depth to a field that should put an emphasis on early position and clean trips.

    A rematch adds another layer

Bravaro, Langvad and Ryan’s Run meet again after filling the first three positions in the Robert Hilton Memorial at Charles Town. Bravaro won that race, while Langvad finished second and Ryan’s Run was third. My Boy Star also enters the Gallant Bob after previously defeating Langvad in sprint company.

Saffie Joseph Jr. has a major presence with Ramajay, Bravaro, Langvad and Dr. Kapur. Local interest comes from Mailata, trained by Robert Reid Jr., who arrives after winning the PTHA President’s Sprint at Parx.

    Where the Gallant Bob fits

The $400,000 Gallant Bob is one of the leading sprint tests for three year olds on the fall calendar. It shares the September 19 program with the Pennsylvania Derby and Cotillion Stakes, giving Parx three major graded races across different divisions.

Always a Runner Leads Nine Horse Cotillion Stakes Field at Parx

Kentucky Oaks winner Always a Runner returns to the Grade 1 stage on September 19 when she leads a field of nine three year old fillies in the $1 million Cotillion Stakes at Parx Racing.

The Cotillion is contested at one and one sixteenth miles on dirt and shares the spotlight with the Pennsylvania Derby on one of the most important cards of the Parx season.

Always a Runner returns after two Grade 1 seconds

Always a Runner won the Gazelle Stakes and then captured the Kentucky Oaks in the spring. She has since finished second to Counting Stars in both the Acorn Stakes and Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga.

Trainer Chad Brown elected to bypass the Alabama Stakes and target the Cotillion. Always a Runner drew post 4 with Jose Ortiz named to ride and was installed as the morning line favorite.

Measure and My Miss Mo bring strong recent form

Measure arrives after consecutive Grade 1 placings at Saratoga, including a runner up finish in the Alabama Stakes. My Miss Mo enters on a two race winning streak after taking the Black Eyed Susan Stakes and Monmouth Oaks.

Zany adds another accomplished contender after finishing second in the Ashland Stakes earlier this season. Iron Orchard is already a Grade 1 winner, while Tap to Open enters after winning the Cathryn Sophia Stakes at Parx.

Explora Leads Six Horse Dogwood Stakes Field at Churchill Downs

Grade 1 winner Explora will return to Churchill Downs on September 19 as the headline runner in a six horse field for the $300,000 Dogwood Stakes.

The Grade 3 contest is scheduled for seven furlongs and will be Race 8 on Churchill Downs’ Saturday evening program. First post for the card is 6 p.m. Eastern, with the Dogwood scheduled for 9:39 p.m. Eastern.

Explora returns after Test Stakes victory

Explora enters for trainer Bob Baffert after a five length victory in the Grade 1 Test Stakes at Saratoga. Her 2026 campaign has also included victories in the Santa Ynez, Honeybee and Leslie’s Lady before her Test success.

She also has important Churchill Downs experience. Explora finished fourth in the Kentucky Oaks earlier this season before returning to shorter distances. Juan Hernandez has the mount from post 1.

    Dogwood Stakes field

The official field, in post position order, is Explora, My Steel Magnolia, Where Luck Lives, Conceit, Movie Night and A Fine Chardonnay.

A Fine Chardonnay brings Grade 2 winning form, while Conceit enters after winning the Audubon Oaks. Their presence gives Explora accomplished opposition in a compact field.

    A strong Saturday night program

The Dogwood is one of three stakes on the September 19 program. The $300,000 Harrods Creek brings together three year old males, while the $200,000 Seneca Overnight Stakes is another opportunity for three year old fillies.

The timing also makes the Dogwood useful form for the final portion of the season. Explora has already demonstrated top level ability at seven furlongs, while several rivals have an opportunity to strengthen their profiles against a Grade 1 winner.

OTB Bet will follow the official result and update its coverage when the race is complete.

Pennsylvania Derby Preview Brings 11 Horse Field to Parx

The Pennsylvania Derby is set for September 19 at Parx Racing with 11 three year olds entered for the $1 million Grade 1 race. The field brings together proven graded stakes performers, improving runners and local horses with experience over the Parx surface.

Parx confirms the Pennsylvania Derby will be contested at one and one eighth miles and will headline a major card that also includes the $1 million Cotillion Stakes and the $400,000 Gallant Bob Stakes.

Further Ado returns to Grade 1 company

Further Ado enters as one of the most accomplished horses in the field. The Brad Cox trainee won the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland earlier this season and also captured the Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs. His most recent start produced a fifth place finish in the Haskell Stakes.

Flavien Prat is scheduled to ride Further Ado from post 7. The colt will try to rebound against a field that offers several different pace and running style profiles.

Iron Honor and The Puma bring major race experience

Iron Honor drew post 2 for trainer Chad Brown. He finished second in the Preakness Stakes and later ran third in the Haskell Stakes. Jose Ortiz is scheduled to ride.

The Puma starts from post 6 for trainer Gustavo Delgado. Earlier this year he won the Tampa Bay Derby and finished second in the Florida Derby. He later competed in both the Haskell Stakes and Travers Stakes.

    Local form adds another dimension

Micanopy enters after winning the Smarty Jones Stakes at Parx on August 18. That local victory gives him proven form over the track. Ponder and Dream, who finished second in the Smarty Jones, also returns and is expected to be part of the early pace.

Zihnal arrives after winning the West Virginia Derby, while Our Moneyman enters after finishing second to Travers Stakes winner Leading Change in the Indiana Derby. Talk to Me Jimmy, Igniter, Freedom’s Echo and Sassmaster complete the field.

  • Floral Park Preview Brings Deep Turf Sprint Field to Belmont Park

Floral Park Preview Brings Deep Turf Sprint Field to Belmont Park

Belmont Park moves into its first full weekend after reopening with a competitive turf sprint on Saturday, September 19. The $175,000 Floral Park brings together 12 fillies and mares over six furlongs on the Widener turf course.

The race is scheduled as Race 9 on a 10 race card, with first post at 12:05 p.m. Eastern. It also becomes the first turf stakes at the rebuilt Belmont Park, giving the race added significance beyond a strong field.

Highway Harmony returns to six furlongs

Highway Harmony arrives after an excellent summer. She won the John Hettinger at Aqueduct on June 28 by two and one half lengths and completed six furlongs in 1:06.44, a track record. She then finished second to Shoot It True at Saratoga over five and one half furlongs.

Trainer Amelia Green now stretches Highway Harmony back to six furlongs. Edgard Zayas retains the mount from post 11. Her 98 Beyer Speed Figure in the John Hettinger is the best figure in this field according to NYRA.

    Tabiti returns for Brad Cox

Juddmonte homebred Tabiti returns from an 11 month layoff for Brad Cox. The Kingman filly has already shown high level sprint ability in Britain, including a Group 3 victory at Salisbury and a dead heat Group 3 success at Goodwood.

Tabiti drew post 9 with Samuel Marin. Her return to sprinting adds an international element to a field that already has several proven American turf sprinters.

    Capturing continues to improve

Capturing enters for Todd Pletcher after winning a Saratoga optional claimer by a nose on July 10. That performance produced a career best 87 Beyer Speed Figure. Her recent form suggests that shorter turf races have become her strongest assignment.

Other notable runners include graded winners Movin’ On Up and Love Cervere, along with Delightful Flame, Leslie’s Humor, Sweet Brown Sugar, Obstreperous, Lovely Emma, Flamingo Way and Quiet Confidence.

    Why the Floral Park matters

The Floral Park provides an early look at how the Widener turf course plays during the new Belmont era. It also gives established turf sprinters and improving runners a useful late season test before autumn stakes programs develop further.

  • Woodbine Turf Champions Day Sets Record With $14 Million Handle

Woodbine Turf Champions Day Sets Record With $14 Million Handle

Woodbine’s 2026 Turf Champions Day did more than deliver four Grade 1 races. It also produced the strongest wagering performance in the event’s history.

Woodbine Entertainment announced on September 14 that the 12 race program generated an all source handle of $14,013,429. That total surpassed the previous Turf Champions Day record of $13.8 million, set in 2021.

Four Grade 1 races drive a global card

This year’s program was the first Turf Champions Day to feature four Breeders’ Cup Challenge races on the same card. The Woodbine Mile, E.P. Taylor Stakes, Summer Stakes and Natalma Stakes each carried an automatic Breeders’ Cup berth for the winner.

The concentration of international runners and championship implications gave the card unusual depth. Notable Speech won the Woodbine Mile, Gimme a Nother captured the E.P. Taylor Stakes, Al Hudaiba won the Summer Stakes and Voyager took the Natalma Stakes.

OTB Bet covered those results in separate race recaps, including the Woodbine Mile recap, the E.P. Taylor Stakes recap and the Summer and Natalma recap.

Return to the E.P. Taylor Turf Course mattered

The 2026 edition also marked the return of Turf Champions Day to the E.P. Taylor Turf Course after the 2025 program was staged on the Inner Turf during renovations.

That return restored Woodbine’s marquee turf races to their traditional setting and helped create a card designed to attract top class participation from Canada, the United States and overseas.

Woodbine said the total handle includes the Woodbine $5 Stakes Pick 3, which is identified as a separate card in tote systems. Even with that accounting detail, the final $14,013,429 figure stands as the event record.

    Why the record matters

Handle is one of the clearest measures of wagering interest in a race card. A record total does not by itself determine long term success, but it shows that bettors responded strongly to a concentrated program built around high quality fields, international participation and direct Breeders’ Cup implications.

The result is particularly notable because Woodbine has been building a broader fall racing sequence around major turf events. The Breeders’ Stakes is scheduled for September 27, followed by the Canadian International on October 3.

For bettors and racing fans, the record also reinforces the value of keeping the strongest races together on a recognizable championship style card rather than spreading them across separate weekends.

Woodbine moves deeper into the fall

The record came during a weekend that also produced significant Sunday stakes results at Woodbine. Stunningly Perfect won the Victorian Queen Stakes, Souper Survivor won the Bull Page Stakes and Elysian Field captured the Belfountain Stakes.

Those results give the track momentum as the Canadian season moves toward its remaining major turf fixtures and late season stakes program.

  • Stunningly Perfect, Souper Survivor and Elysian Field Win Woodbine Sunday Stakes

Stunningly Perfect, Souper Survivor and Elysian Field Win Woodbine Sunday Stakes

Woodbine followed its international Turf Champions Day program with three more stakes races on Sunday, September 13, and each produced a distinct winner worth following into the fall.

Stunningly Perfect captured the Victorian Queen Stakes, Souper Survivor dominated the Bull Page Stakes, and Elysian Field returned from a summer freshening to win the Belfountain Stakes on turf.

Stunningly Perfect earns first stakes victory

Stunningly Perfect earned her first career stakes win in the $150,000 Victorian Queen Stakes for Ontario sired juvenile fillies. The daughter of Perfect Timber recovered from a slightly awkward start and settled behind the early pace before making her move in the stretch.

The race changed immediately when favorite Sarayu unseated jockey Pietro Moran after leaving the gate. Woodbine later reported that Stunningly Perfect advanced from behind the leaders and drove clear to defeat Princess Orlaith by one and one half lengths. Her final time for six and one half furlongs was 1:17.81.

Jose Campos rode the Steven Chircop trainee, who was making only her third career start. The result followed a dominant maiden victory in August and gave her an important first black type success.

Souper Survivor rebounds in the Bull Page

Souper Survivor delivered the most decisive performance of the three stakes races. The two year old colt went directly to the lead in the $150,000 Bull Page Stakes and never surrendered control.

Woodbine reported that Souper Survivor won by five and one quarter lengths under Emma Jayne Wilson, completing six and one half furlongs in 1:17.67. Longshot Leo finished second and It Wasn’t a Bluff was third.

The victory was an immediate rebound from Souper Survivor’s third place finish in the Simcoe Stakes. Trainer Bill Tharrenos had already seen the colt display significant speed earlier in the season, and Sunday’s performance converted that promise into a first stakes victory.

Elysian Field finally breaks through on turf

Elysian Field brought established class to the $150,000 Belfountain Stakes, but she entered the race without a turf victory in seven previous attempts. That changed with a strong closing run over the E.P. Taylor Turf Course.

Fraser Aebly picked up the mount after Pietro Moran was unable to ride following the earlier Victorian Queen incident. Elysian Field settled in fifth before moving wide into contention and taking command in the stretch.

The Mark Casse trained mare won by two and three quarter lengths in 1:46.77 for nine furlongs on firm turf. Just Magnificent finished second and Fortyfiveseventy was third.

Elysian Field had already shown high level ability in Canada, including a Woodbine Oaks victory and a runner up finish in the King’s Plate earlier in her career. Her Belfountain success added a new dimension by giving her a first career victory on turf.

Woodbine closes a major weekend with depth

The Sunday results gave Woodbine a strong follow up to Saturday’s international program, which included the Woodbine Mile, E.P. Taylor Stakes, Summer Stakes and Natalma Stakes.

OTB Bet previewed the Sunday card before the races. Readers can revisit the Woodbine Sunday stakes preview for the pre race picture, then compare it with how the races actually unfolded.

The result also keeps attention on Woodbine’s broader fall schedule. The Breeders’ Stakes is scheduled for September 27, while the Canadian International follows on October 3.

  • Keeneland September Sale Sets Record With 65 Million Dollar Yearlings

Keeneland September Sale Sets Record With 65 Million Dollar Yearlings

Keeneland opens one of the most important events on the Thoroughbred sales calendar on Monday, September 14, when the 2026 September Yearling Sale begins in Lexington, Kentucky.

Keeneland says 4,642 racing prospects are cataloged for the 83rd edition of the auction. The sale runs for 12 sessions through Saturday, September 26 and begins Monday at 1:00 p.m. Eastern.

A major marketplace for future racehorses

The September sale is closely watched because many of the horses offered are still at the beginning of their racing careers. Buyers are evaluating pedigree, physical development and long term racing potential before those yearlings ever reach the starting gate.

The auction also arrives during an important stretch for Keeneland. The track will host its fall race meet in October and then the Breeders’ Cup World Championships on October 30 and 31. OTB Bet readers can follow that championship path through the Breeders’ Cup guide.

    Following a record 2025 sale

Keeneland enters the 2026 auction after a record setting 2025 September sale. The track reported more than $531.7 million in sales for 3,078 horses last year. The auction also produced 56 horses that sold for at least $1 million, while the average price reached $172,755 and the median reached $80,000.

Those figures do not guarantee the same outcome this year, but they provide useful context for the scale of the marketplace. Keeneland attracts buyers and sellers from across North America and abroad, so the sale often offers an early look at bloodstock trends that can influence future racing seasons.

    New surroundings at Keeneland

The 2026 auction is also the first September sale with Keeneland’s new Paddock Building in use. The facility is part of a larger period of development at the track ahead of the fall meet and the Breeders’ Cup.

For racing fans, the sale is less about immediate race results and more about the next generation. Some of the horses going through the ring this month will eventually appear in maiden races, major juvenile stakes and the classic season.

Book 1 closes with record strength

Keeneland completed Book 1 on September 15 with another major jump at the top of the market. The second session produced $79.63 million in through the ring sales from 111 yearlings. A colt by Into Mischief sold for $3.7 million to M.V. Magnier and Peter Brant’s White Birch Farm, making him the most expensive horse of the sale through two sessions.

Twenty three yearlings sold for at least $1 million during the second session, a single session September Sale record. Across the first two days, 41 yearlings reached seven figures, the highest total for the opening two days in sale history. Book 2 concluded September 17 with another powerful session. Across the first four sessions, 633 yearlings sold through the ring for $318,115,000, up 3.41 percent from the corresponding period in 2025. The average reached $502,551 and the median was $360,000. Ten yearlings sold for at least $1 million on Thursday, lifting the sale total to a record 65 seven figure yearlings, already above the previous full sale record of 56 established in 2025. Three colts shared the Thursday session lead at $2 million, two by Not This Time and one by Nyquist. Book 2 itself produced $166,715,000 from 425 yearlings, with an average of $392,271 and a median of $300,000. The sale pauses September 18 and resumes with Book 3 on September 19.

OTB Bet will continue to focus follow up coverage on meaningful market records, major session toppers and racing connections rather than routine daily sale summaries.

Readers following Keeneland’s racing calendar can also visit the Blue Grass Stakes guide and the main Breeders’ Cup hub.

    Opening session results

The opening session produced $71,770,000 in gross sales. A Gun Runner colt led the session at $2.8 million, and 18 yearlings sold for at least $1 million, the largest opening day total of million dollar yearlings since 2005.

The result gives the sale an immediate market benchmark as Book 1 continues on September 15. OTB Bet will continue to track verified session results when they materially change the picture of the sale.
