The Good Life kept his unbeaten record intact on Sunday, September 6, with a commanding front running victory in the Grade 1, $300,000 Spendthrift Farm Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga Race Course.

The seven furlong Hopeful was the stakes debut for the Life Is Good colt, but he handled the jump in class without giving his rivals much opportunity to change the race. Sent off as the 5 to 2 favorite, The Good Life went straight to the front under Manny Franco and carried that position through Saratoga’s traditional late summer showcase for 2 year olds.

A juvenile takes the next step

Trained by Brad Cox for WinStar Farm, First Go Racing and CHC, The Good Life entered the Hopeful off a 3 1/2 length maiden victory at Saratoga on July 18. That debut had already suggested considerable speed; Sunday’s Grade 1 test showed that he could carry it successfully against winners at stakes level.

The result also gives the colt an important early place in the developing 2 year old division as the calendar turns toward the major fall races.

OTB Bet previewed the matchup before the race in our Hopeful Stakes preview, where The Good Life was one of the principal juveniles to watch.

Manny Franco caps a major Saratoga day

The Hopeful was also the finishing touch on a memorable afternoon for Manny Franco. Earlier on the card he won the Grade 3 Prioress aboard Mashallah, a victory that secured his first Saratoga riding title. The Hopeful then became Franco’s 70th win of the meet.

That sequence made Sunday more than a single race story. Franco closed one of the defining meets of his career by pairing a riding championship with two graded stakes wins on the same card.

What the Hopeful result means

Form among 2 year olds can change quickly, and one Grade 1 win in early September does not settle the division. It does, however, move The Good Life from promising maiden winner to proven juvenile at the top level.

The next question is how his speed translates as distances increase and the major autumn races come into focus. The 2026 Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland on October 30 and 31 is now the central championship target on the calendar for the division.
