Mashallah turned the Grade 3 Prioress into a showcase at Saratoga on Sunday, September 6, and the victory carried an extra layer of significance: it also delivered Manny Franco his first Saratoga riding title.
The 3 year old filly, trained by Brendan Walsh for JR Ranch, tracked the early pace before taking control on the turn and opening up through the stretch. She won the six furlong Prioress by five lengths in 1:09.93 over a fast main track. Mythical finished second, with Hen Party third.
Mashallah keeps progressing
The Prioress was another step forward for a filly whose sprint form has become increasingly difficult to ignore. Mashallah entered the race after a dominant stakes win in the Tyson Gilpin at Colonial Downs and now owns four victories from five starts.
Her only defeat came when she was stretched to a mile at Churchill Downs earlier in the season. Returned to sprinting, she has looked far more comfortable, and Sunday’s performance reinforced the idea that shorter races around one turn are where she can be most dangerous.
Connections indicated after the race that the seven furlong Grade 2 Raven Run at Keeneland on October 17 could be a next target. That would give Mashallah another graded test and a chance to stretch slightly beyond Sunday’s six furlongs without moving back to a route.
Franco reaches a Saratoga milestone
For Manny Franco, the result was bigger than one stakes win. The Prioress gave him his 68th victory of the Saratoga meet, enough to secure the jockey championship while tying the benchmark of 68 wins Ramon Dominguez reached during the 2012 summer season.
Franco’s Saratoga campaign included major Grade 1 wins aboard Leading Change in the Travers, My Gun’s Loaded in the Alabama and Survie in the Christophe Clement Turf. The Prioress added another graded score and sealed the title before the meet’s Labor Day finale.
What the result means
Mashallah is not yet a finished product, but the Prioress strengthened her profile among the leading sophomore female sprinters. She has tactical speed, has shown she can sit just off the pace, and finished Sunday with enough authority to suggest seven furlongs should be within reach.
For Saratoga, the race also became one of the defining moments of closing weekend. Franco entered the final days of the meet in a tight jockey battle and used a prominent graded stakes victory to settle it.
